Know Better to Do Better in Business: 10 Lesson Learned

This time last year I claimed that 2016 was the year my business receipts would surpass my dreams.  While I didn’t have any particular plans on how I would achieve greater success in my business or dominate my destiny, I gleefully decreed and declared what I hoped to see this time last year.

Fast forward 11 months later and I find myself surrounded by bigger piles of documents I collected from coaching training programs.  Additionally, I noticed a few extra zeroes on my business debits column, but no so much on the receipt side.  Similarly, I collected a few more unfinished manuscripts and training programs that I started, completed and tested, but failed to launch in my business.

10 Memorable Business Lessons

While I didn’t grow richer or see my bank accounts amass beyond believe, I definitely became richer in knowledge.  I know so much more now in the latter part of 2016 than I have in the accumulated 4 years of trying to start an author, speaker, coach training business.  The following is a list of 10 things I learned in 2016 that once implemented I believe will help others dominate their destiny:

  1. You must implement newfound knowledge to appreciate its power.   I invested way too much in other people’s content that I haven’t even finished or started most of what I paid for.  I also consumed so much information, but never really implemented what I was taught.  Hence, the promise of power, overcoming and conquering, self-help became shelf-help that sat dormant.
  2. Everything that glitters isn’t gold. Glitter was once my favorite color, but after encountering one too many shiny pitch letters, and reading too many glowing testimonials, I’ve come to realize that I should never judge the book by the sales copy.  Instead, I should seek, know and ask whether or not the nice, shiny and glittery promise is meant to tempt me or teach me how to achieve greater for me.
  3. People get their cues from you.  Good, bad or indifferent, people follow your lead.  So if you show up cheap, you’ll be treated as cheap.  If you show up like a participant, you’ll be treated as one.  But if you show up like the boss who’s got what it takes to make a difference, then people will gravitate towards you.
  4. The magic happens when you follow through. Let’s just say that I connected with people and collected calls.  But I never took advantage of offering to help–something I learned in one of many webinars.  Even when people told me to stay connected, I failed to connect.  Hence, the lack of receipts that helps me closer and closer to my dreams of growing my influence and income.
  5. Stay committed to your purpose.  This year, I became very clear about those I could help and would help.  Instead of trying to be all things to all people, I appreciated that I was an attorney and master strategies who were willing to invest in their business.  With just that one tweek, my schedule was less hectic and I produced more information that was relevant to my client avatar.
  6. People must like you and trust you before they will hand their money to you.  Never mind how some people will spend thousands on shoes, spend hundreds on dinner or even lose money, when it comes to the service industry, you must show people that you are smart.  I learned how to do webinars, but never implemented.  I learned how to create programs, but never launched one.  And I learned to have a sales conversation, but never offered anything.  But now that I know better that people must hear me and see me before they will invest in my programming, I’m going to be so much better at showcasing me.
  7. Appearance is everything.  My mother always said when in Rome do as the Romans do.  Essentially, if you want to achieve greater success, you must show up as the best version of yourself.  If you want more business connects, show up as a resource to that satisfies their needs.  And if you want to make more money, show up in your business as a mogul instead of a martyr.
  8. You don’t have to be the Jill of everything.  What I know for sure is that the smartest woman in business delegates tasks to others.  I spent so much time through the greater part of 2016 trying to learn Mail Chimp, trying to set up Ontraport and trying to set up a WordPress website.  And then one day, I realized that I was technically losing money since I was exerted more energy on non-income producing activities.  Let’s just say, I’ve contacted others to help a sister which gives me more time to spend more time in income-producing activity.
  9. Never stop believing. Way too many people fail to achieve success because they stopped believing which caused them to stop practicing which affected their ability to become the best version of themselves.  But when you truly believe you are meant to achieve, you will not stop yourself from submitting to the process of getting into position for God’s provisions.
  10. Focus on getting what you want.  I don’t negate the beauty of believing more is possible and affirming one’s footsteps.  However, I’ve come to respect those focus their blood, sweat, tears, energy and money on planning success, setting smarting goals and staying committed to the process until they have produced the substance of the very thing they hoped for and prayed for.
